Waitomo

 

Back in Napier, after spending the Weekend in Waitomo

with Chalky. We visited his dad in Te Kuiti and went to

Hamilton, the Glowworm Caves and his cousins farm.

That’s how the Waitomo Area looks like:

Most of the Area is covered by huge dairy and sheep farms. the highlight in Te Kuiti is the annual sheep sheering competition :D

The Waitomo Caves are one of the most famous tourist attractions of the North Island. There are plenty of activities to do, such as black water rafting, tubing, abseiling or just boat tours through the caves. We decided to do the granny version, having a tour through the caves and then taking the boat to see the glowworms.

That’s what it looks like:

There are three main Caves, the one we visited was the Waitomo Cave, which is most famous for it’s glowworms.

Those are the Glowworms and their catching lines. They use the light to attract prey and catch them with their sticky lines, just like spiders do with their cobwebs.It definetely is pretty impressing to sit in a boat, gliding through the dark with all those lights above you.

Some more information about the caves

After the Caves we went out to David’s farm. his property includes a 200feet high Waterfall. We took the quad out to the Waterfall and walked through the river up to the edge of it. It looks massive, you just see the water running past you and dropping 200 feet deep. real cool! After that the “real farm life” continued and we did some gun shooting :) I even managed to hit the target…(A huge pond^^)

And on our way back we stopped in Taupo and dipped our feet into a hot pool, right on the edge of the lake. Soooooooooo cool, you just sit there, it’s pretty cold and your feet dangle into that hot water, which just comes out of the earth while you have the view over the lake and the lights of the city!
